Mixing asphalt sealer in 55-gallon drums properly is one of the most important things you have to learn when starting out in the business. If you're new to the asphalt maintenance business or you're looking to refresh your knowledge, then let us teach you how to do that.

Things You'll Need

  • Access to water via a garden hose with a shut-off valve
  • A long barrel mixer
  • A heavy-duty cordless drill mixer (Have a corded drill instead? You're going to mix the sealer outside, so make sure that you have access to an electrical outlet)
  • A clean broom handle for the dip test

Mixing Asphalt Sealer in 55-Gallon Drums

Step 1: Remove the lid of the 55-gallon drum.

Step 2: Check the consistency of the sealer. Unmixed sealer has  water sitting on top of the black sludge. Mixed sealer, meanwhile, does not have water sitting on top (as it has been incorporated into the sealer) and has the consistency of soup.

Step 3: Dip the clean broom handle all the way in to see if the liquids have been mixed. If you see the lower half of the stick covered in thick black goop while the upper half is covered in dirty water, then the sealer is unmixed.

Clean the broom handle by hosing it down with water and set it aside.

Step 4: Take your cordless drill and dip the barrel mixer into the liquid until the tip scrapes the bottom of the drum.

With an up and down motion, start mixing water into the sealer. Next, mix it with a side-to-side motion until everything is fully incorporated. The mixing process can take around 4 to 5 minutes.

Step 5: Dip the broom handle into the liquid to check if the sealer is completely mixed with water. If you see a nice and uniform line of sealer coating the stick (no line separating water and sealer), then you're good to go. It's now time to transfer it into the asphalt sealer sprayer and get to work.
